How it works

Your pharmacist prescribes and vaccinates.

Since 2023, French pharmacists have had wider powers: our qualified pharmacists can now both prescribe AND administer most vaccines on the national immunisation schedule, for anyone aged 11 and over. You no longer need to see a doctor first to get up to date.

In practice, you come into the pharmacy: we check your vaccination record and your eligibility, we prescribe the right vaccine if needed, and we give it to you on the spot, in a few minutes. The vaccine is then written into your record. A few specific situations — immunosuppression, a baby's first vaccinations, known contraindications — are still referred to your doctor.

Vaccines we give

Depending on your age and circumstances, we can vaccinate you against:

  • · Seasonal flu
  • · Covid-19
  • · Tetanus, diphtheria and polio boosters
  • · Whooping cough (pertussis)
  • · HPV (human papillomavirus)
  • · Meningococcal disease
  • · Hepatitis A and B

Frequently asked

Your questions, answered.

Do I need a prescription to be vaccinated at a pharmacy?

Not necessarily. Since 2023, qualified pharmacists can prescribe most vaccines on the French immunisation schedule from age 11. You can come without a prescription; if you already have one, bring it with you.

Do I need an appointment?

No — you can walk in during opening hours. For flu or Covid vaccines at busy times of year, booking on Doctolib or calling ahead will save you waiting.

Which vaccines can you give?

Our qualified pharmacists can prescribe and administer most vaccines on the French immunisation schedule from age 11: seasonal flu, Covid-19, tetanus/diphtheria/polio boosters, whooping cough, HPV, meningococcal disease and hepatitis A and B, among others. Some specific situations are still referred to a doctor.

From what age can you be vaccinated at the pharmacy?

Prescription and administration by a pharmacist apply to people aged 11 and over. For younger children we will direct you to a doctor or a dedicated centre.

I am visiting France. Can I be vaccinated here?

Yes — vaccination is open to visitors as well as residents. You pay for the vaccine and the injection yourself, and we give you an itemised receipt (facture) so you can claim from your travel or health insurer at home. Bring your vaccination record, or a note of your previous vaccines, if you have one.

Are flu and Covid vaccines free?

For people covered by the French health system who fall within the official recommendations (65 and over, pregnant women, people with certain conditions), flu and Covid-19 vaccines are paid for by the Assurance Maladie. We check your eligibility at the counter.

Should I bring my vaccination record?

Yes, if you have it: it lets us check which vaccines are up to date, avoid unnecessary doses and plan your next boosters. We record the vaccine given in it.

This page is for information only and does not replace medical advice. Vaccination recommendations depend on your age, your health and the immunisation schedule in force. If you have an unusual reaction after a vaccination, contact your pharmacist or doctor; in an emergency in France, call 15 (SAMU) or 112.
